Packaging manufacturers across different substrates announced closures and layoffs in July:
- Cascades plans to close its corrugated medium manufacturing facility in Niagara Falls, New York, impacting 123 employees. The company said the decision aligned with goals to optimize its packaging business. Aging assets and operating costs also played into the decision, a spokesperson for the Quebec-based company said. Production at the plant is scheduled to end by Sept. 3, and Cascades plans to assist the affected employees.
- International Paper filed a worker adjustment and retraining notification with the state of California disclosing plans to close a container facility in Buena Park. The company planned to stop production by Aug. 2, and the 71 affected employees are eligible to apply for jobs at other locations, a spokesperson said. IP determined that capacity from this facility could be incorporated into other nearby facilities. The company also filed three new WARN notices in Texas to update details of previously announced box plant and sheet plant closures in Edinburg. The total number of affected employees now stands at 137, and IP extended the closing date to Sept. 1.
- O-I Glass plans to end production at a glass bottle manufacturing facility in Portland, Oregon, according to a WARN filed with the state. Beginning Aug. 5, approximately 90 employees will be laid off at Owens-Brockway Glass Container, a subsidiary of O-I. They will receive pay and benefits for 60 days, and the company intends to offer other assistive services, according to the WARN. Some affected employees are represented by United Steel Workers local unions. Owens-Brockway plans to continue operating a warehouse at the site.
