In packaging, accuracy matters. Digital proofs rarely match final print output; especially when it comes to color, texture and material. That disconnect leads to slow approvals, missed expectations and costly do-overs. MUTOH is changing that.
Known for our made-in-Japan precision, MUTOH empowers packaging teams to move beyond digital proofs by creating physical mockups on real materials. Whether you’re proofing a flexible pouch, a folding carton, corrugated or a rigid setup box, the print systems deliver tangible mockups that look and feel production-ready, right down to the substrate.
Why Prototyping on Real Materials Matters
Mockups are more than visual references. They're how design teams, brand managers and clients align at a crucial part of the process. When a proof, or sample, doesn't match production, it creates friction across the development process. Our technology eliminates that friction by giving teams the ability to print directly onto the materials used in final production, skipping the unrealistic expectations.
MUTOH allows you to print on rigid boards like SBS, FBB, corrugated and flexible substrates like PET or shrink film and even textured corrugates. You're not limited to coated proofing papers or mockup-friendly materials. This is the MUTOH standard in packaging: Real Materials. True Colors.
That level of realism leads to faster stakeholder buy-in, more confident approvals and a streamlined path from concept to production.
Inside the Packaging Prototyping Ecosystem
The modular print and finishing lineup is built for flexibility. It all starts with the right ink for the right substrate:
- MP31 Multi-Purpose Ink bonds with materials common in flexible and folding carton applications. Unlike UV inks that sit on top, MP31 integrates with the substrate to replicate the look and feel of traditional offset, flexo, or gravure printing.
- UV ink systems add dimensional effects like spot gloss and texture to rigid packaging, bringing tactile realism to boxes, inserts and displays.
- Printers like the ValueJet 628MP, ValueJet 1628MH and ValueJet 1638UH Mark II can be used independently or in tandem. The 628MP handles flexible film and pouch applications with direct-to-substrate capability. The 1628MH and 1638UH Mark II allow for wide-format rigid mockups on chipboard, SBS and various corrugated liners.
When used in tandem, these systems enable real-world packaging mockups that mirror production color and finish for internal reviews, client presentations, or sales samples.
Guided by 2nd Gen Experience
Part of the MUOTH team is Business Development Manager, James Stanley, a second-generation Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) with deep experience in design, production and materials. James works closely with converters, designers and brand teams to integrate real-substrate workflows into existing operations.
“The MUTOH Packaging System does what no other printer manufacturer can,” says Stanley. “For over 25 years I have worked closely with teams producing color mockups. These are the solutions that we, in the field, have been waiting for! Finally, we can ditch the proofing media and print directly onto the real substrate, achieving true color.”
Built for the Way You Work
The packaging solution suite is RIP-agnostic and integrates easily into existing environments. Features like the Laser Origin Pointer enable seamless alignment across multiple devices, ensuring consistent registration, reduced waste and fast setup.
With a diverse ink portfolio; including UV, MP, eco-solvent and dye-sublimation. There’s a solution for nearly every packaging material, all without locking users into proprietary systems.
This isn’t about simulating packaging. It’s about showing it exactly as it will appear on the real material, with the right color and finish.
