Plastics were the packaging substrate most affected by company closure and layoff announcements in May. Here are the disclosures on Packaging Dive’s radar:
- Amcor Rigid Packaging filed a worker adjustment and retraining notification with the state of Texas disclosing plans to lay off 56 employees, which Plastics News reports is due to a plant closure. Layoffs at the Fort Worth facility are slated to begin July 2, per the WARN.
- Hilex Poly, a Novolex subsidiary, filed a WARN with the state of Virginia announcing its intent to close a plastic shopping bag manufacturing plant in Richmond, affecting 118 employees. The company expects these permanent layoffs to begin July 14 and be completed by Sept. 11.
- Origin Materials will shut down its operations and sell its PET cap technology along with other assets, the company announced. It launched a workforce reduction that was slated for completion by the end of May. Members of the executive team also were said to depart, including CEO John Bissell; COO Matt Plavan has been appointed as interim CEO. In February, the company had flagged financial challenges that prompted a restructuring and reduction in workforce.

- Henkel is closing its adhesives manufacturing facility in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, affecting 57 employees, per a WARN filed with the state. The first round of layoffs is scheduled for June 30, operations are slated to end by Sept. 28, and the facility is expected to close permanently by Feb. 28, 2027.
