Multiple manufacturers in June announced upcoming shutdowns affecting more than 480 workers across the packaging industry. This brings the yearly total of North American packaging industry workers impacted by announced closures and layoffs tracked by Packaging Dive to more than 2,800.
Additionally, production at Nippon Dynawave’s Longview, Washington, site remains suspended since a deadly May 26 implosion.
- Ineos Styrolution plans to permanently close its polystyrene production site in Channahon, Illinois, during the fourth quarter, citing margin pressures. The 400,000-metric-tons site, which the company determined is “no longer economically viable,” employs approximately 100 people.
- International Paper announced four shutdowns slated for the third quarter, affecting 330 total employees. It will close a sheet plant in Aurora, Illinois (41 workers), along with converting plants in Elk Grove, California (136 workers), and Barrington, New Jersey (133 workers). The company also plants to cease preprint operations at a facility in Richwood, Kentucky (20 workers).
- Smurfit Westrock intends to permanently close a Lebanon, Tennessee, folding carton facility come Aug. 14, affecting 52 workers. The employees at the facility are not represented by a collective bargaining agreement and do not have bumping rights, according to a notice to the state.
