The Science Based Targets initiative has approved Cascades’ new greenhouse gas emissions targets, the company announced.
Upon releasing its 2025 sustainability report in June, Cascades also introduced its fifth sustainability plan since 2010, covering 2026-2030. That plan includes reducing scope 1 and 2 emissions by 67.2% and scope 3 emissions by 41.3% by 2035, compared to 2019.
SBTi had approved Cascades’ previous targets in 2021. The Quebec-based paper and packaging company says it’s on track to achieve the new 2035 targets considering it reduced Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 32.6% from 2019 to 2025.
SBTi’s approval is “an important recognition of our climate commitment and demonstrates the credibility of our decarbonization roadmap,” said Cascades President and CEO Hugues Simon in a news release.
The company says it intends to continue initiating and advancing projects to improve energy efficiency, reduce energy consumption from operations, electrify certain equipment and explore new renewable electricity sourcing opportunities.
“While these targets are ambitious, they are supported by robust action plans and initiatives that are already well established across our operations. By leveraging innovation, collaboration and disciplined investment management, we are confident in our ability to continue reducing our carbon footprint while creating sustainable value,” said Simon.
Among other targets, Cascades aims to make detailed carbon footprint data available for all “priority products.” It also strives to make 100% of its packaging recyclable, compostable or reusable by 2030. According to the company’s 2025 sustainability report, it has achieved 98% toward that goal. But adjusted data in the 2026-2030 roadmap indicates Cascades had achieved 87.9% in 2025.
